A little about us

We care deeply about this area and the people who live here. Our roots run back more than 125 years, so you might say we’ve grown accustomed to this place.

Our past is important—it’s what’s brought us to this point. It’s something we celebrate every day.

But what truly excites us is the future we’re building together—friends, neighbors, and community. When there’s that much caring taking place, it’s a fair bet that we’ll be around for another century or more.

We don’t just talk the talk. We’re dedicated to helping this be a great place to live and work. From scholarships and sponsorships to taking part in the celebrations that are so important to our communities, we believe in giving back to the people we call neighbors and friends.

The roots of a new telephone company were planted when 3 start up companies, The Wittenberg Telephone Company, The Elderon Telephone Company and The Wittenberg Rural Telephone Company began constructing aerial lines and providing telephone services in what is now the Wittenberg and Elderon Telephone Exchange area. This filled a great need in the community by providing a method for rural farmers to communicate with each other.

The Wittenberg Telephone company was officially incorporated on January 4, 1921 with Ray Peterson as it’s first President. The new company was formed when stock from The Wittenberg Rural Telephone Company was transferred to the new company. The Elderon Telephone Company and original Wittenberg Telephone Company were purchased later that year. Calls were routed through a switchboard located on the second floor of the Johnson Mercantile, which later became Cappel’s store at 109 W Vinal St.

After several decades of serving the community from its original location, a stock sale was issued to raise funds to construct a new office at 104 W Walker St. The new building was completed in the fall of 1953 to house a new switchboard, telephone office, garage and storeroom. There have been a few updates and renovations over the years, but this is still our current location today.

In 1967 Wittenberg Telephone Company introduced dial telephone service. The switchboard in Wittenberg was replaced with the new Automatic Electric Step-By-Step switching equipment. This revolutionized how customers made phone calls by eliminating the need for operators.

In 1996 Wittenberg Telephone Company began to roll out internet to customers in Wittenberg and Elderon. We have continued to upgrade our technology and to expand the areas we serve. We now offer lightning-fast speeds and the latest technology through our high-speed fiber optic network combined with a fixed wireless network to serve many more communities and rural areas.

In 2012 the Wittenberg Telephone Company opened a second office in Antigo under the new name of “Cirrinity” This allowed us to bring vital high-speed internet and our great customer service to new areas in Langlade County and expand our footprint even further.

In 2021 the Wittenberg Telephone Company celebrated 100 years as a communication and technology leader in North Central Wisconsin. We continue to honor our history, heritage and the Wittenberg Telephone Company name, but we have expanded the services we offer and the area we serve outside the area around Wittenberg. The decision was made to change the company name and move forward through the next 100 years as Cirrinity.
